The Men’s Health Project started in June 2009 and is funded by Volunteering England.
The aim of the project is to improve the health and well being of men in the most deprived wards in South Sefton through the implementation of peer-designed and supported programmes of activity.
The project recruits male volunteers who will receive basic accredited training in peer mentor skills and selected health promotion options. As men are much underrepresented in our volunteer workforce this will improve the profile and diversity of our volunteers.
The project aims to help local men to develop strategies to improve their own well-being e.g. weight management programmes incorporating information about nutrition, basic cooking sessions and a variety of exercise programmes designed by men and linking into their interests and self-perceptions.
We offer a number of activity sessions throughout the week including the following:
Weight management for Men
We run weight management courses throughout the year the courses last for six weeks and are delivered by trained weight management leaders. The course is designed for adults who need help in planning a suitable weight loss programme based on the latest evidence of what works best.
Men's Cooking for Health
This is a six week practical based course which includes basic nutrition, seasonal ingredients, healthy cooking techniques, basic knife skills and following and adapting recipes.
Chair Based Exercises
We have a friendly group of men attending the Chair Based Exercise session. These Exercises are targeted at men with limited mobility. The aim of the class is to learn gentle exercises that will help to improve strength and mobility.
Circuit Training For Men
This class is aimed at men who would like to improve their fitness in a fun and friendly atmosphere. You do not have to be an Olympic Athlete to join in this class. You will work hard but at a pace which suits your fitness level.
Walks for Men
Would you like to improve your general fitness and enjoy friendly company at the same time? Walks for Men starts with a two mile walk and build to six miles over six weeks. Come along and enjoy the walk and a natter on Thursday mornings at 10.a.m.
Would you like to go walking in the Countryside?
We have Volunteers training for the Basic Expedition Leaders Award which will enable them to take Men out into more remote rural areas. We will be going on walks, sometimes camping overnight and returning the next day.
