Upstairs @ 83 is a drop-in centre. We are open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12.00 and 2.30pm. We have an open door policy and no referral is necessary. We see people who have a number of difficulties in their lives, only one of which is poor mental health.
We ask for respect from everyone, for everyone. We ask for understanding, that people’s experiences and illnesses have been instrumental in creating their behaviours. We ask for a willingness to recognise when behaviours are creating unnecessary difficulties. And we ask for a willingness to change these to more rewarding ones.
We provide a safe place. We offer information, understanding and guidance as to how things can be different. We provide formal and informal programmes, including counselling, advocacy and computer skills. About four times a year we run ‘Positive Thoughts’ an eight week educational/therapeutic programme. This has excellent outcomes. We also sometimes just have fun!
As long as people are getting a value from our service we do not place a time limit on interventions. We create an environment where it is safe to take the risk that if we change, our lives will get better. We provide structures where people can feel valued and wanted, and we facilitate the continuation of relationships outside the Upstairs environment.
